Female Rappers Stream Big—but Win Small:
A Look Into Gender Gaps in the Music Industry
This data story explores gender disparities in the rap industry, specifically focusing on the recognition and success of female rappers compared to their male counterparts. Using a dataset compiled from top-charting male and female artists, we analyzed key metrics like streaming numbers, award counts, collaboration frequency, and recent performances. Our group discovered that although female rappers often receive more monthly listeners than male rappers, they fall behind significantly in the number of awards received and total songs released. This project was created for JMC 309 and combines data analysis, visual storytelling, and industry context to present a deeper look at the challenges and progress of women in hip-hop.
